Language In India is a monthly online journal devoted to the study of the languages spoken in the Indian sub-continent. We wish to present the scholarly research findings on these languages in popular language. Our focus is on language use in mass media, education and administration, speech and hearing, sociolinguistic and political aspects relating to these languages and the society in the Indian subcontinent. We wish to present the linguistic descriptions, interdisciplinary research, and current issues of importance relating to Indian languages. Following the age-old tradition of Indian scholarship, the pages of this journal are open to scholarly articles on any language. We believe in co-operation and mutual help to foster amity between all peoples and their languages. This online journal publishes not only articles, but also book-length reports and studies. We want to be a blessing to Indian languages, praying for "strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow." We sincerely believe that every Indian language deserves our whole-hearted support for growth and that every one can find its place in a mosaic of unity and understanding, serving each other and singing the glory of God.

Workshop on Morphology

Introduction

The importance of morphology has recently been recognized as critical in the context of MT, IR, IE and such applications, especially for Indian languages. Considering this, a one-day workshop on Morphology is planned at IIT Bombay on 31 March 2005. The main aim of the workshop is sharing of experience and evolving solutions and future directions. The hope is to bring together researchers working on/interested in subtleties of morphology. An intensive interaction between theoreticians and practitioners is expected. The workshop will provide a comprehensive perspective to both linguists and computer scientists involved in the field of computational linguistics.

We invite extended abstracts on all topics related to the theme, including but not limited to:

Role of morphology in scientific/humanistic study of language
Salient issues regarding Indian Language Morphology
Inflection and Derivation
Terminology
Lexicology and Morphology
Morphology and Syntax
Semantics and Morphology
Morphology and its application to language technology
Morphology for Web Technology

Extended Abstract

Potential participants should submit their extended abstracts (not exceeding 5 pages) in DOC/PDF formats, which emphasize their experiences in fundamentals and processing of morphology. The following should be included:

Extended abstracts may be written in English or Hindi. A scientific committee will review them.

Workshop format

The event will include presentations and discussions. Papers should be delivered in English or Hindi.

Provisions

Only local hospitality will be provided to the participants. The workshop venue will have overhead and data projectors. It will help if the participants send their presentations a-priori.
