A PROGRAMME ON DESIGNING AND PUBLISHING ONLINE RESEARCH JOURNALS
(to Train Researchers in Linguistics, Indian Languages, English and Adjacent
Sciences) July 5-9, 2005.
The Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL), Mysore is glad
to announce holding a workshop on Designing and Publishing Online Research
Journals to Train Researchers in Linguistics, Indian Languages, and English
and Adjacent Sciences from July 5 to July 9, 2005. The workshop will be
held at the Central Institute of Indian Languages.
Dr. M. S. Thirumalai, a former deputy director and professor
of this Institute, will direct this workshop.
It is preferred that the participants of the workshop should
have some previous knowledge and experience in using a computer, and in
word processing, and drafting, sending and receiving e-mails. The medium
of the Workshop is English. Please do not plan to attend this workshop
if you do not have this pre-requisite qualification.
The participants will learn the following:
- The characteristics and structure of a web page.
- The use of Note Pad and Word Pad, as well as some introduction
to a few HTML code formatting software.
- The formatting codes needed to design a simple web page with
running texts as well as linguistic symbols, etc.
- The formatting codes to insert various links, including images.
- The design of a simple online research journal in linguistics or adjacent
sciences.
- The internal stylistic characteristics of a journal, and how
these characteristics can be adopted for the web page.
- How to upload and download web pages.
- How to maintain an online journal.
- Other related issues.
This is an intensive, hands-on training workshop. The goal of
the workshop is to enable the participants to produce at least one issue
of their imaginary journal with at least five articles, and a home page.
They will also link their journal issue with the journal issue prepared
by another participant of the workshop. Time permitting, they will also
prepare a web page giving the index of articles, etc. They will be trained
to upload and maintain their issues.
Those who are really motivated to learn are welcome. They may
bring with them at least two new articles of their own, and three articles
of others in the electronic format. If they do not have their own laptop,
they have to be prepared to work during the night or morning in the CIIL
computer lab in order to finish their daily home work, which will be heavy.
Most of participants' time will be spent not on listening
to lectures, but on actually working on your web pages! Strict discipline
will be enforced.
Here is an opportunity to learn first hand from the person who
has been publishing LANGUAGE IN INDIA http://www.languageinindia.com
for the last 5 years. This journal receives 186,000 hits every month (currently
a little over 200.000 hits) and is accessed in over 75 countries.
The university/college departments are encouraged to send their
personnel for this training so that they can easily design, upload and
run their journals. Contact Dr. B. Mallikarjun, mallikarjun@ciil.stpmy.soft.net
for registration and for other details such as accommodation, etc.
Registration will be done on first come first serve basis. There
is no registration fee.
Seats are limited.
