TRANSLATION : NEW DIMENSIONS
Articles on Methods of Translation as Applied to
Indian Texts

Editors: C. Shunmugom, Ph.D. and
C. Sivashanmugam, Ph.D.

This book has four parts:

  1. Part I deals with the history of translation as applied to Indian languages.
  2. Part II deals with literary translation dealing with such issues as translating a mythological novel, use of universal grammar in translation, characteristics of faulty translations, media translation, etc.
  3. Part III deals with the aspects of science translation.
  4. Part IV deals with the aspects of machine translation.

Copious examples from Indian languages are presented in all the articles. The focus is on how to relate modern trends in translation to actual translation between various Indian languages, with Tamil playing a central role in these discussions. The volume is a product of the seminar conducted by the Department of Linguistics, Bharathiar University, Coimbatore.

Indian languages have a very rich tradition of translation from Sanskrit, resulting in great literary works. Translation as an important tool of gathering information for further creativity and for inter-ethnic communication is recognized in the ancient Tamil grammar, Tolkappiyam. Similarly, Sanskrit grammarians have also recognized the important role translation plays in developing and refining Indian civilization. Elaborate rules of usage have also been recognized, and assessment tools are also offered in traditional schools.

We are now in a world that demands quick, reliable, faithful and comprehensible translation for most of our academic, technical and economic activities. We believe that this book create interest in the students of linguistics to dig deeper into the processes of translation and set standards for current and future excellence.
