Sri Gidugu Venkata Ramamurti’s Life and His Works

Telugu is a great classical language of India. With early inscriptions and with great classics, Telugu occupies a very important position not only within the Dravidian family of languages but also among all the Indian languages. Music, drama and grammar and all other important tools for communication and aesthetic enjoyment offered by Telugu make the Telugu language a unique medium.

Ramamurtigaru's movement to make Telugu comprehensible to all, not just for the selected few from privileged classes, gave Telugu greater vitality. Ramamurti's concern for tribal languages places him well ahead of many leading modern Indian linguists. His work on Sora language continues to be a great inspiration for all of us on the field. Ramamurtigaru did not care for his personal well being when he worked on the tribal language. His devotion to the tribal language, his insights into the complexity of the Sora language and his genuine concern to develop this preliterate language into a vibrant literate language impacted my teacher Stan Starosta to dedicate his Ph.D. dissertation to Ramamurtigaru. Stan Starosta personally admired the genius of Ramamurtigaru, often mentioning him in his syntax class at the University of Hawaii. He also pointed out the pioneering role of Ramamurtigaru's interest in the description and development of a tribal language.

Indian linguistics found its true meaning in Ramamurtigaru's works. He looked beyond his own great mother tongue and used his talents to help develop preliterate languages.
