Krishna Zilla Patrika Rangam - Oka Pariselana

Newspapers and Journals of Krishna District
An Assessment
A Doctoral Dissertation in Telugu

Dr. K. Ramakrishna, M.A., M.Sc., M.Ed., M.Phil., Ph.D.

The regional language press in India has a hoary past, a commanding present and definitely a bright future. There is a virtual boom in the number of regional language newspapers and periodicals published not only in the number of newspapers published, but also in terms of the tremendous relationship they enjoy. It is natural that the leading language dailies are more influential in their respective regions. The Telugu press of Andhra Pradesh is no exception. The present thesis would trace the history of newspapers published in Telugu, especially in the geographical limits of Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh state in India.

The first Telugu newspapers published in the sixties of the last century owed its inception to missionary effort. The Hitavadi, which was published weekly, ceased to exist after a few years. The Canadian Baptist Mission published the weekly Ravi from Kakinada, gives space to news as well as religious matters. Kandukuri Veeresalingam Pantulu made a beginning in Telugu Journalism with his weekly the Vivekavardhni devoted to social and language reform. A competing paper was the Andhrabhasha Sanjivini, edited by Venkataratnam Pantulu, also a scholar and socio-religious leader. These two papers carried on a lively controversy on the common subjects in which they were interested.

The first Telugu news weekly was started in 1886 by A.P. Parathsarathi Naidu from Madras under the name of the Andhra Prakasika. The credit for starting a Telugu daily paper goes to Devaguptam Seshachalapathirao who started the Desabhimini, from the city Vijayawada, the financial capital of the state of Andhra Pradesh situated in Krishna district. He started the paper first as a fortnightly, than as a daily newspaper in the last decade of the twentieth century. Hence, Krishna district got the credit of starting the first Telugu daily newspaper.

The famous Krisha Patrika had its birth in Machilipatnam, the capital city of Krishna district. The other illustrious daily newspapers of the present century Andhra Jyothi, Visaalandhra, Prajasakthi were also started from Vijayawada. The other exalted newspapers of the state of Andhra Pradesh like Eenadu, Sakshi, Vaartha, Andhra Bhoomi, Andhra Prabha etc also stared their branches in Vijayawada. On the other side, Krishna district owned a great status by giving birth to remarkable editors Mutnuri Krishna Rao, Kasinadhuni Nageswara Rao, Sivalenka Sambhu Prasad, Narla Venkateswara Rao, Nanduri rama Mohanarao, G.V.Kripanidhi, C.Raghavachari and others. Apart from daily newspapers, nearly 600 weekly, fortnight, monthly, bi monthly, half yearly and yearly journals and periodicals are being produced from Krishna district. Both in quality and quantity aspects, this number is a great figure.

Newspapers and Its Language structure

Now a day’s print media is keeping its highest attention on its language style. Each and every paper wishes to have its own methodology of language and even font styles also. Hence, more and more attention is being paid by the news editors in the concerned desk in this regard. Mainly, the print media is giving high up interest to put headings (titles) to the news items, which plays a major role in attracting the readers towards selecting the newspaper to read and even to buy. In the age old days, the editors (In those days editors and publishers are one and the same. Now, the scene changed) are very much interested to use totally Telugu language in their newspapers. Right from titles, all the matter is in Telugu. As days are passing on, the outlook of the editors is being changed. More and more English words occupying the place of Telugu word and phrase in order to suit the present trend of the youth.

On the other side, the language specialists in newspapers are producing new words and syntaxes in news writing. With this, tremendous changes are occurring in the meaning of Telugu words and syntax. Cinema dialogues, vernacular sentences are being used by the news reporters and editors.

This is all one side of changes in newspaper pattern. With the rapid changes in printing technology, the lay out designs and color settings of the news paper were also changed. Some papers like Sakshi are reaching the hands of readers with all color pages. All most all the papers are now implementing their own design, lay out and font structures. With all these changes, the newspapers and journals are attracting the readers.
