Nuances of Making Spell and Grammar Checker for Tamil

Abstract

The monograph "Nuances of making Spell and Grammar Checker for Tamil" written in Tamil aims at describing the nuances of making a spell and grammar checker for Tamil. The book has 5 chapters.

Chapter 1: The first chapter is introduction. It introduces the topic of the research work. It explains the aims and objectives of the book. It also discusses briefly about the earlier works on this topic and also about the use of such research work.

Chapter 2: The second chapter discusses about the nuances of spell and grammar checking.The possibility of occurrence of spelling errors, finding out the spelling errors and correcting them, finding out the non-words in language and correcting them and the methods of correcting spelling mistakes using Bayesian method and short distance method are discusse under the subheading 'spell checking'. Under the subheading 'grammar checking' the following points have been discussed: syntax based checking, statistical based checking, rule based checking have been discussed. The background principles, part of speech tagging, chunking, grammar errors, non-specific modifier and the word followed, question, other mistakes, finding out the boundary of sentences, controlled language correction and style correction have been discussed under the subheading 'Style and grammar checker'.

Chapter 3: This chapter discusses about steps or initiatives to be taken for spelling checking and grammar checking. A description is made about the phonological structure of Tamil including vowel and consonant phonemes and their phonotactic structure and consonant clusters and syllabic structure. This is followed by morphological structure of Tamil. Under morphological structure of nouns, the inflection in nouns, noun stems, inflected stems which includes inflected stem ending in ttu, aRRu, stems formed by doubling of consonants, stems of pronouns, number marking, augmentation by in and an, case suffixes and sandhi rules have been discussed. Verb inflection, verb stems, verb roots, causative and non-causative verb stems, derived verb stems, soft verb stems, middle verb stems and hard verb stems, finite verb stems, imperative verb stems, interrogative verb stems, tense suffixes, person-number-gender suffixes, inflectional paradigms, irregular verbs, optative verb forms, non-finite verb forms, infinitive verb forms, adverbial and conditional verb forms, adjectival verb forms, nominalized verbs, verbal nouns and appellative verbs are discussed under the morphological structure of verbs. This is followed by a section on computational morphology. Under this heading theory and implementation, formalism and construction, frame work for hybrid model, allomorphic state, nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, implementation of hybrid model. are elaborated on. Next is on sandhi rules. This is followed by spell correction in Tamil. Under this headings mistakes due to pronunciations, mistakes due to not knowing phonological structure, mistakes due to interference of spoken Tamil, mistakes due to mother tongue influence and morphological mistakes are discussed.

Chapter 4: The fourth chapter is on making spell and checker for Tamil. Under this heading the spell checker made for Tamil have been discussed first. The spell checkers prepared by Danabalam, Vijay Sankar Ram and Deivasundram have been discussed.
