AN INTRODUCTORY COURSE ON SEMANTICS AND PRAGMATICS

This monograph introduces semantics and pragmatics to the students of linguistics, applied linguistics, sociolinguistics, anthropological linguistics, traditional grammars as well as for the benefit of speech and hearing students. Students of logic, philosophy and communication also will benefit by a study of semantics and pragmatics. This work is written in the style of a correspondence course.

AIM

The aim of the subject of study is to give a brief introduction to semantics and pragmatics. Semantics is the study of meaning. More precisely it is the study of the relation between linguistic expressions and their meanings. Pragmatics is the study of context. More precisely it is the study of the way context can influence our understanding of linguistic utterances.

UNIT 1 Nature and scope of semantics

UNIT 2 The study of meaning

UNIT 3 Lexical semantics I

UNIT 4 Lexical semantics II

UNIT 5 Componential analysis of meaning

UNIT 6 Dynamics of word meaning and lexicon

UNIT 7 Grammatical semantics and sentential semantics

UNIT 8 Pragmatics

Each Unit is divided into several parts, and for every part an important section of learning activity is provided. Learners are given examples. They are also asked to do some exercises in every part, based on the content presented to them in the section.
