A Monograph - Textbook in Tamil

Prof S. Rajendran

Abstract

This monograph on "Semantics and Pragmtics" is based on Cruse (2000) and Cruse (1966) with an aim to introduce semantics and pragmatics to Tamil students and scholars focusing on Tamil. This is written in Tamil.

This monograph is divided into four parts which includes eighteen chapters.

The first part introduces fundamental notions. A few things like logical matters, dimensions of meaning and copositionality are discussed in this part.

The second part is on words and their meaning. Here in this part lexical semantics, word meaning, paradigmatic and syntactic relations of meaning are discussed.

The third part is on semantics and grammar. Here in this part semantics in relation to grammar is discussed.

The fourth part is on pragmatics. Here in this part reference and dexis, speech acts and implicaters are discussed. This is followed by a conclusion.
