Tamil Verbal Bases from Dravidian Etymological Dictionary – A Research Report in Tamil

Prof. S. Rajendran

Abstract

This detailed research report in Tamil takes up eight Tamil verbal roots for detailed analysis from the well-known and established Dravidian Etymological Dictionary written by Professors T. Burrow and M. B. Emeneau (Oxford, Clarendon Press, 1961).

This research report presents how from adjectives verbal roots are generated, how verbal roots are generated from sound combinations, how by changing meaning verbal roots are created, etc. An elaborate number of grammatical categories and functions are shown to generate verbal roots in Tami.

The author believes that this list will be a greatly useful in writing textbooks, in generating technical terms, understanding semantic notions and variations in addition to writing/creating a variety of literature including poetry, wherein metaphors etc. play an important role.

Keywords: Tamil Verbal Bases, generation of roots, comparative notions, relations between verbs, Dravidian Etymological Dictionary
